What to expect
Bugis is where Singapore is at its most practical. A three-floor market of small stalls selling clothes and phone accessories, several malls connected by underground passages, and one of the better public libraries in the region, all within a few minutes of each other. It is not picturesque and does not try to be. What it is, reliably, is somewhere you can spend three hours without ever going outside, which matters more than it sounds in this climate.
Getting there
Bugis station on the East West and Downtown lines sits directly underneath. Exit C comes up inside a mall; exit E puts you at street level heading towards the historic quarter.
When to go
Any time, which is the point. The street market runs from late morning to late evening. Weekday afternoons are the calmest. When it rains, this is one of the two or three districts where a downpour genuinely does not affect your plans.
What a resident would tell you
The national library building here is free, air-conditioned, sixteen floors tall and almost never busy on an upper level. It is the best free place in the city centre to sit down for an hour, and visitors essentially never use it.
Worth knowing
Prices in the street market are not fixed and a little negotiation is normal, particularly for more than one item. Be good-humoured about it; it is expected rather than adversarial.
